Evaluation Question 6

Blogger was the internet software that i saved all aspects of my work to, which allowed me to develop and record all of my ideas. It allowed me to post all of my work in the order of when i did them which kept everything in order and easier for me to get work done efficiently. I learned a lot from it as i now know how to use it properly as i am able to edit posts, make my blog public, look at other blogs, how to import pictures and videos ect. Blogger helped me because it allowed me to keep on top of my work, and i knew it was secure and that my work was safe. Also it was more time efficient because i could access it from home. Without this program i wouldn't have been able to save all of my work online, which would have taken more time which would have made me lose out on time i needed to improve my product.

I used the iMac's for everything in my product, it allowed me to access all of the other softwares, it allowed me to upload photos for my product, it allowed me to save files to my own space so that i knew where my work was at all times. I have learnt how to use the macs properly throughout making my products as i now know how to completely function the iMac, i know how to find programs and open programmes which proved to be very useful. The iMacs helped me a great deal because it made my work easier to access and easier to work with. Without the iMacs i would not have been able to complete my work to a high standard because i would not have had all of the programs i needed to ensure my work was at a high standard.

Photoshop was an essential piece of software that i used throughout the development of my media product. It allowed me to manipulate images for my front cover, contents and DPS which was a vital part of my work. It also allowed me to create my actual magazine as i used it to put all of my imagery, text, colour, importing fonts, using layers to manoeuvre content on my product easily. Throughout using photoshop i have developed my skills and learned how to manipulate imagery to a high standard, i have learnt how to use brushes and import new ones, same with text and importing new types, i have also learned how to use layers correctly and how to edit them individually. Another thing i learned is how to manipulate the text and make it any size, shape or colour, i could use the characters box and used tracking, leading and kerning to improve the look of my text. It helped me largely because it made it easier for me to create my product to a high standard. Without Photoshop i would not have had a high level piece of work, i wouldn't have been able to get the product done as quickly and as efficiently as i did.
In Design is another software that i used for importing large amounts of text for my contents page and for my DPS. I learned how to manipulate text and make it fit better in my magazine and also learned how to make a picture box and place a picture inside of it. It was quite helpful because it allowed me to put my article into columns to make it look more professional, same with my contents page it allowed me to do the same thing with the list of contents. I found that if i didn't have this software it would have been harder for me to use the text in my final product.

I used the camera's to actually take all of the photos which are in my magazine, i learned how to take pictures using depth of filed as i could take a photo of my model and make the background blurry so that all of the focus was on them. It has helped me because it has given me all of the photos that i have got in my product. Without this i would not have had good quality photo's or i would have had no photos at all which means i would have a product that wasn't at a high standard or it could have been unfinished.

The Lighting was another thing that i used in the development of my product as i learned to use it to manipulate my photo's taken with the camera by making my photo's look darkened to fit in more with the genre i was trying to relate to.  This helped me a lot because i needed my photos to be a bit darker so that it did relate to the genre, and without the lighting setup i wouldn't have been able to achieve this so my product wouldn't have been at the high standard that it is at now.

Pixton is a program that i used online to make a kind of comic strip which i used for putting information into my blog but making it look more appealing. This enabled me to present my information in a more creative way and it also allowed me to answer my other evaluation questions more clearly. Without this i think i wouldn't have been able to use any creativity with my information.

Another program that i used online is Prezi, which again allowed me to make the information i had gathered more interesting by making it flow through showing creativity and making it look more appealing to people. Without this i wouldn't have been able to do my initial research as quickly as i did.

Slide share is another program used through the internet, this allowed me to put my powerpoint on the internet and into my blog. This helped me because i wouldn't have been able to put the information into my blog in a powerpoint format without using this.

Final Cut Express is a software that allowed me to make my own video's. I have used this in one of my other evaluation questions which helped me make the video shorter which is easier to understand. Throughout the making of my magazine it has helped me gather information in my Audience research as i recorded myself asking questions about what people looked for in a magazine which contributed to my final product. Without this i wouldn't have been given as much clear feedback from my peers as i did which would result in my product being at a lower standard.

I used GarageBand in one of my other evaluation questions to create a soundtrack to go behind a video that i had made. It was useful because it enabled me to make my own song and be creative, and also it allowed me to convert it to MP3 Format which i combined with a video. Without this my evaluation question would have just been a boring video with no sound and just moving images which wouldn't have been very creative.

Another software that i have used is PhotoBooth, this program allowed me to gather feedback on my final product in another of my evaluation questions. This was helpful because it's very simple to use and it is very effective as it is not time consuming. Without this i would have had to record multiple videos using a tape which would have taken a very long time, but with this program i was able to record one after another.

Another program i used was Screen Grab, this was very useful because it allowed me to show the progress i was making through my magazine as i could screen grab parts of my magazine and show how i have changed it. Also it allowed me to screen grab things off other magazines in my research to compare to mine. Without this it would have been harder for me to compare certain things in my magazine because i would have had to crop my image and save as a jpeg file.

I used the internet for most things in the build up to my final product, i used it for slideshare, prezi, pixton and dafont.com, without all of these i couldn't have made my magazine to my full potential so therefore the internet played a very important role in the making of my magazine.

Microsost Word also played an important role in the making of my magazine, this is because i used it for my call sheets, recce and risk and hazard assessment. This was very useful as it was easy to use and i was able to import photo's into it and large amounts of text. Without this i could not have used any of the photos that i used because i needed the call sheets to use the photos and also i would not have been able to shoot in the location i did without the recce.

Evaluation Question 5

In my magazine i have used things similar to what have been used in Kerrang Magazine as i was trying to appeal to the same kind of audience. i have used the same kind of scratchy font and also the same layout of the models as their heads are all placed above the main sell line yet under the mast head. Also the costumes are similar as they are both wearing dark clothes which again relates to the sam e kind of audience.

I didn't completely use all of the things kerrang used because i wanted my magazine to differ from others. I changed the typical colour scheme as i went with blue white and black instead of red white and black, this is to make my magazine more edgey and stands out from the others.

The pictures above are my rough cuts of my product, I got feedback off these and i changed my product to make it look more professional. The things i changed are, the picture on my front cover as this one was not fitting into the genre i was trying to appeal to. Also the size and the location of the sell lines on the front cover because this looked messy and not very professional. In my contents page i changes the colour of the columns on the right hand side to black and then put white and red writing in them to make it stand out more. And also in my DPS i changed the font colour on the first letter of every word i made it the same colour blue as the blue that is all the way through my magazine to make it all look more professional and it makes it all flow better.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout designing my magazine i always had the idea of a distorted/scratchy font as my mast head because it will appeal to the audience i am appealing to as you can see on my rough cuts. Things that i have changed on my front cover are, i have made my main sell line smaller than what it is on my rough cuts so that the layout of the magazine looked more professional. I also changed my mind on having a box behind the leeds badge because i thought it looked better without and that it stood out more.

When designing my contents page, i drew up a layout that i wanted in my magazine's contents page. As you can see i have kind of kept to that layout with the pictures on the left with my next weeks issue feature and also with the columns on the right. What i changed was the size of the font and pictures to make it all look more professional so that appealed more to my target audience.

Again i always had an idea of a layout for my DPS also, this is shown how i have two columns on the right hand page and a picture on the left. I changed this by adding smaller pictures on the bottom and then changing most things so that it fits better and is more professional looking.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the feedback of my final product, these are the questions i asked:

  • What draws your attention to the product?
  • What genre is it and how do you know?
  • What do you consider are the strengths of the product?
  • What social groups does it represent and how?
  • Would you purchase the product and why?
  • How would you improve the product?

Evaluation Question 4

In this mood board i have shown what is the audience for my media product. We can see this because it shows pictures of what shops they would shop for clothing in, for example Topman and Topshop, also we see by what the band members are wearing on this that this is also what my audience would wear. Also they would wear converse and vans shoes which us shown in my mood board.

Also we can see what they like to do in thier spare time, as there are pictures of xbox and instruments and tv programmes, these are all hobbies of my audience.

Alos in my mood board we can see what kind of bands they listen to, we can see the likes of paramore, bullet for my valentine, you me at six and all time low. These bands are what will feature in my magazine therefore appealing to my audience.

Rough Cut Feedback

After reading through all of the feedback given to me from my peers i have decided that i will change some aspects of my work, this includes:
  • Lighten up the front cover.
  • Change number on the skyline.
  • Put more content in the contents page.
  • Make the masthead stand out more.
  • Choose a different photo in Contents.
  • Move things closer together on the page so there arent any big empty spaces.
  • Make things less dark throughout magazine by adding brushes.
  • Vary shot distances.

Rough Cuts of Products

Layout of my magazine

Front Cover

This is my mast head, i have layed this out at the top of the page so that it is the first thing everyone will see. Also you can see that i have put a skyline above the mast head which has a picture that relates to it, i have placed this here so that people are drawn towards it and want to read more about it.

These are my sell lines, i have placed them like this on a slant so that they look unusual and new, which relates to the rock genre because the audience like new and unusual music. I have also Placed the main sell line right in the middle so that naturally the readers eye is drawn to it first.

This is my puff, i have layed this out the way i have because it looks kind of like bullet points, this is to show a sense of structure so that it is easy for people to read and so they know exactly what content is in the magazine.

Contents Page

This is the layout of my pictures in my magazine. i have layed them out like this because it makes them look cramped together which suggests that the magazine is crammed with content. I have also placed text on the photos because it stands out and tells the reader exactly where they are going to find the content.

This is my "next week" magazine which is situated at the top left of the page, this is where the reader first looks and i have done this so that they are aware what content will be in next weeks magazine. I have made the picture on a slant so again it looks unusual and grabs attention.

This is my list of contents. I have layed them out like this so that it is an easy list to read. This allows people to chose their own page to look at and lets them go through the magazine with ease. Also i have sectioned it with the white background for the titles and a black background for the content to make it more professional.

This is at the bottom of my contents page, i have located it here so that when people are finished reading through the page they see the website and that makes them want to go on the website.

Double Page Spread

This is the text i have placed at the top right of my DPS. I have placed it here because it is the most important part of the page as it describes the whole story. Also some of the text is on a slant to make it look more attractive.

This is another piece of text placed in the top right. This is above my main article, i have placed this here so that people look at it before the article and so that they know what it is about. Also you can see on the right hand side is another piece of text which is placed on a white paint splash. i have done this for attractiveness which is very effective for getting the readers interested. Also there is a picture underneath which relates to the article, this is why i have placed it here.

This is my article. I have layed it out like this because it is very easy to read as it is in 2 separate columns which have the same size text. I have put it on a black background so it stands out more. I have also put pictures at the bottom of the page which is effective because it makes it look like there is not as much to read rather than it being really long and boring.

Fonts in My Magazine

I have chosen this for my mast head because i want it to impact on the reader as soon as they look at it. Also the way i have used a stroke around it which contrasts with the colour will help me to achieve the impact on the reader. Also i think this fits with the rock theme as it is distorted and big, i got my ideas through researching the magazine covers for kerrang, they use similar techniques which have proven to be successful.
This leeds badge is something i have made, it is meant to replicate the original leeds festival badge. This will be on my front cover because the colours will stand out and it will appeal to the rock genre because they will recognise the logo and will want to read on. The font used in this again is meant to look like the font used in the actual leeds festival badge.

This is my puff which will be at the bottom of my front cover. The font i have used for this is the same as the mast head, this is so it carries on the genre of the magazine. I have made it white and situated it on a black background so that it stands out to the reader and gets them more interested.

Again with these sell lines i have made it stand out on a black background to get the audiences attention. The font i have used is different to the mast head giving a sense of variety so that the audience doesn't get bored of the same text.

This font is again distorted to fit in with the rock genre which is presented throughout. Also it is a american college style writing which will appeal to a younger audience, this will make the reader more likely to read it.
